Abstract
1,260,480. Palladium-on-carbon catalysts. STANDARD OIL CO. 24 Dec., 1968 [29 Dec., 1967], No. 61370/68. Heading B1E. Catalyst consisting of metallic palladium having a crystallite surface area upward from 0.6 m<SP>2</SP>/g supported on carbon is prepared by a process which comprises contacting catalyst consisting of metallic palladium having a crystallite surface area less than 0.6 m<SP>2</SP>/g with chlorine, optionally saturated with water at 25‹C, at a temperature below 540‹C until the palladium is converted to palladium chloride, removing unreacted chlorine at a temperature below 540‹C and thereafter reducing the palladium chloride to metallic palladium with hydrogen at a temperature between 100 and 540‹C. The metallic palladium may constitute from 0.1 to 10 weight per cent of the catalyst. The catalyst may be in the form of filaments, gauze, flakes, spheres, pellets, granules or powder. As exemplified, catalyst consisting of metallic palladium supported on carbon granules is activated (Example 1) or reactivated when thermally deactivated (Example 2) by contact at 370‹C with chlorine saturated with water at 25‹C and thereafter at 205‹C with hydrogen, and copper-deactivated catalyst consisting of metallic palladium supported on carbon granules is reactivated by contact with boiling formic acid and, after removal of the formic acid from the catalyst by evaporation, for example by boiling, and washing with water, at 300‹C with chlorine saturated with water and thereafter at 430‹C with hydrogen (Example 3). The catalyst may be used in the purification of terephthalic acid containing pformylbenzoic acid as impurity; in this connection and otherwise, reference is made to Speoifcation 1,259,297.
