Abstract
126,031. Sopwith Aviation Co., and Sopwith, T. Nov. 1, 1916. Steering and balancing.-The elevator of an aeroplane is mounted upon the rear end of a tail plane which can also be adjusted in incidence by screw and nut mechanism actuated by cords from a hand-wheel near the pilot's seat. Fig. 1 shows an elevator D pivoted to the rear edge of a plane A pivoted at B to brackets on the fuselage. Two tubes F<1>, Fig. 3, held in alinement by a screw F attached to the upper tube F<1>, slide in bearings F<5>, F<6> on the fuselage, rotation of the tubes being prevented by a bolt F<4> passed through slots F' in the upper tube F<1>. A three-part casing G<1>, G<2>, G<3>, held together by bolts, has bearings G<4>, G<5> enabling it to rotate on the tubes F<1>, and the part G', which is formed as a flanged pulley, is integral with a nut G engaging the screw F. The upper end of the tube F' is curved to engage with slight play a tube A<1> at the rear of the plane A. A tube F<8> in alinement with the tube F' slides in guides F<9>, F<10> in the fin H, and its lower end engages the tube A<1>. Lugs F", F<12> on the tubes F<8>, F<12> are braced to the rear edge of the plane A. Cords G<6> passed around the pulley G' are led to a drum J, Fig. 6, mounted on a tubular shaft K near the pilot's seat. A hand-wheel L is mounted on the tube and has a serrated disk Z<1> normally held in engagement with a similar stationary disk Z by a spring Y. By turning the wheel L which has a pointer to indicate the extent of movement, the nut G is turned and the tubes F<1>, F<8> moved vertically to adjust the angle of incidence of the plane A. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 124,832.
