A warehouse storage and article selection device comprises a first set of inclined roller conveyers 1 along which articles 2 pass by gravity, a second similar set of conveyers 3 inclined in the opposite direction, two sets of lifts 9, each set being arranged to receive an article from a higher conveyer and deposit it on to a lower conveyer and an elevator 6 which is arranged to receive an article from the lowermost conveyer 3 and deposit it either at a hatch 10 for delivery, if it is the preselected article, or to deliver it to the top conveyer 1 for recycling until the selected article arrives at the delivery of the lowermost conveyer. The selection may be visual or by photo-electric devices which act upon reflective surfaces on the articles and stop the elevator at the hatch 10 when the preselection agrees with the reflection. The lifts 9 are hydraulically operated and the elevator 6 is a pair of motor driven chains with hooks 5 that attach themselves to lugs on the articles and electrical switchgear and circuitry is provided which ensures that no conveyer is overloaded and that no article is deposited on to an article on a lift at a lower level. A number of such devices may be arranged in a warehouse and they may be controlled by a computer which sets in motion the correct device and stops the device when the selected item is at a delivery hatch.
