Abstract

1,259,821. Treating aqueous waste liquids. P. P. PALADINO, L. A. COMBS, and J. W. GOOCH, [trading as SEA-MET]. 9 Jan., 1969 [9 Jan., 1968; 30 Aug., 1968; 6 Dec., 1968], No. 1350/69. Heading C1C. A process of coagulating or agglomerating particulate material suspended or dispersed in an aqueous liquid medium comprises generating or introducing a dispersed gaseous phase of a reagent within the liquid medium to induce coagulation or agglomeration of the waste material. The process is stated as being applicable to various waste effluents and the gaseous reagent is dispersed in the aqueous medium in the form of bubbles having diameters within the range of 3À72 A-0À1 mm. Preferred reagents include fluorine, chlorine, hydrogen sulphide, carbon dioxide, sulphur dioxide and ozone. In an apparatus described, the Figure (not shown), a chlorine solution is prepared at a temperature of 100-700‹ C. and a pressure of up to 6 atmospheres and then introduced into a dispersion tank (10) in which foraminous baffles (12) assist dispersion of the chlorine gas released. Alternatively, chlorine may be produced by the electrolysis of sodium chloride.
