Abstract

1,259,044. Testing recoil mechanisms of guns. FRANCE ARMED FORCES MINISTER OF. 18 March, 1970 [19 March, 1969], Nb. 13141/70. Heading F3C. The invention relates to a method of and apparatus for testing the recoil: mechanism of a, gun by applying a force to the muzzle of the gun to create an acceleration of the barrel of the gun. The method comprises the steps of compressing a gas in a gas compressionexpansion system and then releasing the energy stored in the gas by allowing it to expand to apply accelerationto the barrel.. The apparatus disclosed. for carrying out the method includes a cylinder housing a piston P, which piston divides the cylinder into a gas chamber A and an hydraulic chamber H. The cylinder is provided with outlets O to a valve assembly and throttling orifices F and the piston is provided with a rod T the outer end of which co-operates with a. thrust block B.. The block B is rotatable by an assembly R so that in the acceleration producing stroke the block B and rod T move together until at a a predetermined time the block B is rotated such that splines C1, C2 on the block B and. rods T interengage to allow the block B to slide relatively to the rod T under the action of a spring R1 (Fig. 3b, not shown). The gas, e.g. nitrogen, is compressed by pumping hydraulic fluid into the chamber H until the required pressure is achieved. The valve assembly which comprises a piston P1 mounted on an unstable linkage B1, B2, B3 is actuated by the electrical operation. of two fingers. V1, V2 to allow the piston P1 to move in response to the hydraulic pressure to uncover vent conduits Cd. The link B3 is pivotally connected to a shockabsorbing piston P2 through a member which comprises the piston of a shock-absorbing arrangement, the. piston P2 forming the cylinder thereof. The movement of the piston P at the end of its working stroke is braked by the co-operation of a cylindrical sleeve Ta of the cylinder with a cavity in. the piston P.
