Abstract

1,258,550. Production of hexachlorophene. CENTERCHEM Inc. 13 Oct., 1970 [9 March, 1970], No. 48561/70. Heading C2C. Hexachlorophene is prepared by reacting substantially equimolar amounts of 2,4,5-triehlorophenol, formaldehyde and 2,4,5-trichlorophenyl sulphate in a solvent in which the 2,4,5- trichlorophenyl sulphate has been prepared in situ by reacting 2,4,5-trichlorophenol with a sulphating agent. The reaction between 2,4,5- trichlorophenyl sulphate, 2,4,5-trichlorophenol and formaldehyde is preferably effected at 35‹ to 60‹ C. The preferred solvents are methylene chloride, ethylene chloride, chloroform, perchloroethylene, diethyl ether, dipropyl ether or dibutyl ether.
