Abstract
1,258,222. Testing coins. VENDALL MACHINES Ltd. 23 Feb., 1970 [14 April, 1969], No. 8505/70. Heading G4V. Coins of above a minimum size falling from shoot 11 in a channel between vertical plates are caught by a cradle (12, Fig. 1, not shown) which then tilts to deposit the coins on runway 9. Ferrous slugs are held by magnet (13, Fig. 2, not shown). The speed at which the coins leave runway 9 is affected by eddy currents induced by magnet 10. Fast moving coins of brass or other low conductivity metal strike anvil 21 and rebound to the left of separator 40. Genuine coins of silver or other medium conductivity metal leave the runway at an intermediate speed and fall to the right of separator 40, whilst slow moving copper coins, i.e. those of high conductivity fall to the left of the separator. Nickel coins, which would otherwise be stopped by magnet 10, are attracted by magnet 16 so that they swing open spring-biased gate 17 in plate (1) to travel along guide (18) at the rear of plate (1) until they fall through aperture 20 into the path of the other genuine coins, thus by-passing magnet 10. Stops (45, 46) limit the forward and rearward movement of gate 17 about pin (41). Anvil 21 comprises the lower part of sweeper 22 which is pivoted at 29 and biased by spring 32 against stop 33, whose position may be finely adjusted by screw 38 to control the normal position of anvil 21. On operation of a coin return lever, roller 23 is depressed, causing member 24 to pivot about 25. Pin 30 thereby produces a clockwise rotation of arm 22 so as to sweep coins held by magnet 10 into the coin return path, whilst cam 27 moves roller (28) so as to rotate plate (3) and thus move runway 9 from the path of arm 22.
