Abstract

1,258,194. Separating hydrocarbons. ESSO RESEARCH & ENG. CO. 27 June, 1969 [1 July, 1968; 11 Oct., 1968], No. 32688/69. Heading C5E. A liquid hydrocarbon mixture comprising nparaffins, isoparaffins or naphthenes and aromatics not forming complexes with urea or thiourea is separated by countercurrently contacting with a slurry of urea or thiourea under anhydrous conditions to form adducts and a liquid solvent comprising an ether alcohol, polyol, an acetic acid ester of glycerol, furfuryl alcohol, n-methylpyrrolidone, propylene carbonate, 1 piperazine ethanol or 2-chloroethanol for up to 30 minutes whereby an equilibrium is established and the solvent extracts at least a portion of the aromatics, the solvent being capable of promoting the formation of two liquid phases in equilibrium with the adduct, one liquid phase comprising the feed mixture depleted in constituents adducted and the other liquid phase comprising the solvent associated with the adduct and extracted aromatics as a slurry. The solvent may be miscible or immiscible with the feed. In a modification of the process when the solubility characteristics and feed are such that two liquid phases would not form, an additional compound may be added to bring about the formation of two phases, said compound reducing the solubility of the solvent in the feed and being capable of forming an insoluble inclusion compound with the host which need not in this modification be urea or thiourea but may be a variety of compounds. Preferably the solvent is an ether alcohol or a polyol and the additional compound is a cycloparaffin. Examples of the main process describe the treatment of light naphthas with thiourea and 2 methoxy ethanol and the modification is illustrated by the separation of durene from a mixture with xylene using thiourea, 2 methoxyethanol and methylcyclohexane.
