Abstract

[Also in Division G4] Negative going zero-crossovers of a signal (a) Fig. 2, whose frequency is to be measured cause (i) a pulse 7, Fig. 1, (c) Fig. 2, to close a gate 12 and to sample SW14 the output of a digital-toanalogue converter SW1,...SW13, R, R1,... R13, and (ii) a pulse 8, Fig. 1, (d) Fig. 2, to reset a binary counter 11 so that counting of clockpulses 10 can take place until the next negative going zero-crossover occurs in the input signal. The digital-to-analogue converter receives a constant current 14 and is so arranged that its output voltage to an amplifier 15, (g) Fig. 2, is at a maximum when the counter is empty, so that its output represents frequency and not period. Compensation for the period (c) Fig. 2, during which the output is sampled and resetting is effected-during which in theory counting should be taking place-is effected by resetting the counter to small count rather than zero, or by adding a resistor R to the digital-to-analogue converter.
