Abstract

1,258,022. Gramophone record. MATTEL Inc. 13 Jan., 1970 [17 Jan., 1969], No. 1556/70. Heading G5R. A gramophone record for use in a gramophone in a toy comprises a first annular area 14 carrying a plurality of recorded sound sequences in respective similar spiral grooves G1-G6 and a second annular area 16 divided into sectors S1-S6 each associated with a sound sequence groove and carrying a series of lead-in grooves for that sound sequence groove. Each sound sequence groove, e.g. G4 has a main lead-in groove 34 in its associated sector S4 and a series of secondary lead in grooves 35, 36, 41-45 connected to the main lead-in groove. Thus the accuracy required for indexing of a record and its playback stylus 30 to reproduce a particular sound sequence is much reduced in that the sequence is selected by placing the stylus anywhere in the associated segment area. In a second arrangement, Fig. 2 (not shown), two adjacent annular areas divided into lead-in groove sectors are provided and a particular sound sequence is obtained by indexing both record and stylus to select the associated sector. In a third arrangement, Fig. 3 (not shown), the annular area divided into sectors is nearer the record centre than the area carrying the sound sequence record grooves and the record rotates in the opposite sense. In a further arrangement, Fig. 4 (not shown), two annular areas divided into sectors are provided, one nearer and the other further from the record centre than the sound sequence record area.
