1,257,523. Determining position. PHILIPS ELECTRONIC & ASSOCIATED INDUSTRIES Ltd. 4 Feb., 1969 [5 Feb., 1968], No. 5831/69. Heading G4H. Apparatus for determining the position of a rotation stabilized satellite relative to a heavenly body S (Fig. 3) includes a cylindrical lens L between a slit F in a diaphragm for transmitting light from the heavenly body S and a binary coded plate C comprising a mask with transparent and opaque portions. Behind the plate are photo-cells comprising a laminated strip of material exhibiting the Faraday effect, polarizing material and photo-sensitive material so that digital signals representing tan # where # is the angle between the sun and the satellite are obtained. The slit has a central interruption so that read-out pulses having sharp leading and trailing edges are obtained. The angle may be measured twice per revolution when the azimuth angle is 0 or #.
