Abstract

[Also in Divisions G2-G3] A strip handling apparatus such as a cine projector, or tape recorder, for use with strip wound on a reel in a cartridge of either first or second types, 2 or 3, each with locating and fixing surfaces peculiar to the type for engagement with corresponding means on the apparatus, type 2 having a flanged reel, and type 3 having a reel with a central bore 8 aligned with apertures in the cartridge walls, the apparatus comprising threading means 4 movable into either cartridge to remove the strip-end, a friction wheel 5 movable on arm 6 to engage and drive the reel flange in cartridge 2, and a mandrel 9 movable to enter bore 8 to drive the reel in cartridge 3. The mounts for wheel 5 and mandrel 9 are interlinked so that with one operative, the other is moved to an inoperative position, cartridge 2 having an opening to receive wheel 5 which is omitted on cartridge 3. The threading means 4 comprises a driven friction belt and stripper arm movable to engage the strip roll on a reel, and together with the threading means and drive wheel or mandrel, is operable with a range of cartridge sizes of either type. In various embodiments, the apparatus may receive both cartridge types simultaneously, mounted coaxially, with axes parallel, or with axes inclined. The cartridges may be selectively moved to engage the drive and threading means, or in other forms, the drive and threading means are moved to engage either cartridge type. Again, duplicated cartridge mountings and drive and threading means may be provided. The apparatus may be constructed to receive and drive interchangeable adapters containing a threading device and drive means suitable for any size of a particular cartridge type. Devices for sensing the cartridge type inserted in the apparatus and actuating the appropriate drive and threading means are described.
