Abstract

1,256,939. Folding fabric sheets. UNIROYAL A.G. 16 May, 1969 [25 May, 1968], No. 25087/69. Heading D1S. Apparatus for folding a fabric strip 28 comprises a supporting table for the strip 28, a pair of carrier rollers 11 protruding through apertures in the table for contacting the underside of the strip, a pair of shaping rollers 19 disposed above the table, means for rotating the rollers 11, 19 in a direction such that the strip 28 is forced between and folded by the rollers 19, and a folding aid 10 capable of acting on the underside of the strip 28 and located between the rollers 11 to direct the strip towards the rollers 19 on rotation of the rollers 11, 19. The apparatus comprises a frame 2 pivoted at 3 to a base 1 and supported by two lifting cylinders 4. An inclined worktable comprises plates 5, 6, 7, the plate 5 containing a series of openings which form the outlets of air channels 10 forming the folding aid. The rollers 11 protrude into the gaps between adjacent plates and, preferably, each consists of large-diameter discs 13 with smaller diameter discs 14 placed therebetween to provide annular recesses 18 in which the channels 10 are located. The outer surfaces of the discs 13 are cross-knurled. The rollers 11 are supported along their length by bearings 12 each supporting a disc 14 and mounted on the base 1 by an extension 15, an adjustable pressure spring 16 and a nut 17. The rollers 19 may be hollow cylinders each having a smooth outer surface and are backed by softer rollers 20 acted on by adjustable pressure springs 22. In use, the frame 2 is swung upwardly and held by the cylinders 4 whilst the strip 28, e.g. rubber-coated tyre cord fabric, is fed over a table 27 onto the worktable 5, 6, 7 to abut a stop bracket 8. The cylinders 4 lower the frame 2 and the rollers 11, 19 are rotated and air is admitted to the channels 10 to effect folding. The rollers 19 may be rotated at a peripheral speed very slightly greater than that of the rollers 11.
