An unwinding arrangement of the kind in which a flyer 6 rotates around the bobbin B is characterized in that an inflatable member 12 is constrained to bear directly or indirectly against the flyer to impart a frictional retarding force. In the embodiment shown the inflatable member 12 is a ring housed in an annular groove 11 and bearing against a floating annular disc 14. The disc 14 has a face lined with friction material 16 that is urged by the member 12 into engagement with an end face of the outer race 4 of a bearing 3, the flyer 6 being carried by said outer race 4.
