Abstract
1,256,589. Electrolytic purification of water. P. DE ARIETA-ARAUNABENA RUIZ. Aug. 18, 1969, No. 41206/69. Heading C7B. A process for purifying water comprises (a) passing a current through the water using an iron anode 4 to produce iron ions in the water, (b) passing current using carbon anode 7 to produce hypochlorite ions from chloride present in the bath which oxidize the ferrous ions; the ferric ions formed reacting to form ferric hydroxide which flocculates and carries with it impurities which are in suspension, (c) separating the floculate and aerating the water (e.g. using decanter 10 as shown), (d) passing current through carbon anode 12 to form hypochlorite which decomposes to form free chlorine, and (e) if desired, passing current through silver anode 15 to form sufficient silver ions in the water to kill any remaining microorganisms. Alternatively, if the chloride ion content of the water is below 5 ppm, platinum or other inert metal anodes are used in lieu of the carbon anodes 7 and 12; in step (d) sufficient oxygen being produced to kill the oxygen-sensitive organisms present in the water. The current flowing through the various anodes may be proportional to the amount of water being treated. As shown the counter-electrode is formed by the pipe 5, 11 through which the water is flowing. Current may be supplied using A. C. source, transformer and rectifier, Fig.2 (not shown). Means is provided such that passage of water ceases if treatment stops.
