Abstract
125,608. C. I. (1914) Syndicate, Jenkins, H. C., Blackmore, W., and Howard, A. Sept. 5, 1916. Pcrchlorates, obtaining; cells; electrodes; electrolytes, treating non-chemically.-In oxidation processes, for instance the conversion of sodium chlorate into perchlorate, the electrolyte is caused to flow alternately upwards and downwards through a series of water-jacketed cathode chambers and over cool surfaces between them. In the apparatus shown in Fig. 1, the chambers and intermediate surfaces are formed by a casting 1 acting as cathode, and cooled by a single stream of water flowing around baffles 3 between the chambers. The chambers are nearly filled by anodes 7 which leave narrow passages for the liquid. Each anode may consist of a leaden base faced with platinum, preferably in the form of a single sheet bent over the curved bottom of the anode. The platinum sheet may be held partly by the pressure of the electrolyte, for which purpose the base is provided with grooves or ventholes, and partly by glass, porcelain, or like spacers 10, Figs. 1 and 4, fitting over the vertical edges of the base and facing. The edges of the facing may be separated from the base by insulating-paint and from the spaces by tarred asbestos &c. 12. Lugs extend horizontally from the anodes to a bus-bar. Between the anodes mav be placed earthenware or like covers 13 with gas outlets. A hood 14 with an electrolyte inlet 15 closes the whole series of chambers. After further cooling, the issuing liquid may enter another electrolyzer, which, if the continuity of the stream is interrupted, may be electrically in series with the first. The temperature of the electrolyte must not exceed 40‹ C. A current density of 3 amperes per sq. in. and a pressure of 6.8 volts are suitable. The original chlorate solution may be obtained as described in Specification 125,609 and may have a sp. gr. of 1.45.
