Abstract

125,605. Stone, A. J., and Shuker, W. Sept. 4, 1916. Ordnance design; riflings.-Relates to guns of the kind in which the explosion of the propellant cartridge drives a projectile in one direction and drives an inertia mass in the opposite direction, so as practically to annul recoil, for example as described in Specification 23512/11. According to the invention, the barrel 9 for the inertia mass 11 is of considerably smaller diameter than the barrel 4 for the main projectile 1, the friction of the inertia mass in its 'barrel being, however, made greater than the friction of the projectile in its barrel; this is obtained by making the rifling of the main barrel 4 steeper than that of the small barrel 9. The projectile 1 is attached by spring catches 5 to a plate 2 adapted to fit the rifling of the main barrel 4 and provided with a stem 8 fitting into the small barrel, the propellant cartridge 1<a> being situated between this stem and the inertia mass 11. When the cartridge is fired, spring plugs 6 set back, releasing the spring catches 5, which in turn disconnect the projectile from the plate 2. The gases of explosion act first on the stem 8, and when the stem 8 has passed into the large barrel, the gases act on the plate 2 as well. The projectile is also provided with wings which swing out when no longer confined by the barrel 4.
