Abstract

1,255,628. Thermo - electric generators. BRITISH PETROLEUM CO. Ltd. 3 March, 1969 [7 March, 1968], No. 11107/68 Heading H1K. A generator for supplying electric power to equipment at unattended petroleum well heads comprises a plurality of thermo-couples 12, each having one junction in thermal contact with the outer surface of a conduit carrying warm crude petroleum and the other junction in thermal contact with a cold outer sheath surrounding both thermocouples and conduit. The thermocouples are of P-type and N-type bismuth telluride. Where the generator is to be installed in air, the outer sheath 13 is pressure resistant but the conduit 11 is thin enough to allow the transmission of the pressure of the petroleum to ensure good contact between the thermocouples and the sheath and conduit. Where however the generator is to be installed in water the conduit is sufficiently strong to contain the pressure of the petroleum but the outer sheath is thin enough to allow the pressure of the water to ensure good contact between the thermocouples and the sheath and conduit. Spaces between the sheath and conduit not occupied by the thermocouples are filled with oil or pressure-resistant plastics 14. A plurality of generators may be provided in series on one conduit, or on parallel conduits, and the whole or only a part of the petroleum flow may be utilized. A similar generator may be used with natural gas.
