Abstract
1,206,996. Insulating pipes. SHELL INTERNATIONALE RESEARCH MAATSCHAPIJ N.V. 20 May, 1968 [22 May, 1967], No. 23821/68. Heading F2P. A pipe assembly comprising an oil pipe 12 and a steam heating pipe 13 extending along the outside of the former is insulated by foamed polyurethane half shells 10 each having spacing elevations 11 extending from the inner surface and forming the only contact areas between the insulation and pipe 12 whereby the pipe 12 is exposed to convection heat flow from the pipe 13. The elevations contact not more than 25% of the external pipe surface, and preferably not more than 10% of said surface. Each half shell is provided with rows of integral elevations of frustro-conical shape and a longitudinal recess 15 to accommodate the pipe 13. The half shells may be secured around the pipe assembly by metal or plastics bands and the seams sealed with asphalt or covered with adhesive tape.
