The rate of flow of a liquid is determined by measuring the depth of the liquid passing over a weir C, using a float A attached to the slider of a potentiometer 1 and modifying the signal in accordance with the known relationship between depth and rate of flow for a weir of the given shape. A sample volume of liquid proportional to the rate of flow is pumped to a tipping device 4, mixed at 5 and collected periodically in bottles D assembled on a turn-table 6.
