Abstract
125,553. Dehn, F. B., (Columbia Axle Co.). Aug. 12, 1918. Axle structures.-The rear axle casing is formed from a single sheet-metal stamping having an enlarged middle portion and alined arms; the stamping is channelled and the arms are folded to receive the axle, the middle portion constituting, with suitable covers, a housing for the differential. The arms may be folded round cylindrical tubes which receive the axle. Fig. 5 shows a side view, and Figs. 5<1>, 5<2>, and 5<3> crosssections on the lines 1-1, 2-2, 3-3 respectively. The blank is channelled and the central portion 6 punched out. The edge 7 may be doubled in to strengthen the forward part of the casing. The edges of the stamping are then folded in one or two operations and the seam welded. The circular hole on the near side is trimmed and notches 8, 8<1> cut in both the front and rear to facilitate fitting the gear. The arms may be bent over cylindrical members 12 which, as shown in Fig. 12, may be flared and fit the inside of the casing, or may be straight and fitted with a plate.
