1,255,449. Character recognition. COMPAGNIE GENERALE D'AUTOMATISME. 14 Sept., 1970 [15 Sept., 1969; 24 Nov., 1969], No. 43817/70. Heading G4R. Character recognition apparatus for reading characters composed of character elements arranged on parallel base lines scans the characters along scan lines arranged parallel to the base lines. Using the CMC7 font having vertical elements spaced horizontally with a pattern of large and small spacings characteristic of the character, the apparatus counts the scan lines between successive elements to produce a 1 or a 0 for each spacing, these bits feeding a shift register to control, e.g. a display. The scanning is produced by a vidicon and is rotated if necessary to make the scan lines parallel to the vertical elements forming the character. A plurality of lines of characters may be recognized simultaneously by extending the scan lines and switching the scanner output to respective sets of counter, shift register &c., one set per line. The characters could be composed of horizontal elements, the scan lines being horizontal, and one set of counter, shift register &c. being used for each column of characters. A magnetic character may be read optically using a pair of transparent plates (one being a magnifying lens) between which is situated a thin layer of magnetizable material. The material responds to the magnetic character by varying its thickness in a corresponding pattern, and is scanned optically.
