Abstract
1,255,365. Treating keratinous fibres. GILLETTE CO. 18 Nov., 1969 [25 Nov., 1968], No. 56456/69. Heading D1P. Keratinous fibres e.g. human hair, wool are treated by a method which comprises (a) sulphitolysing the fibres to form S-sulpho groups or both S-sulpho groups and thiol groups in a ratio of at least 1:4 in the keratin (b) changing the configuration of the fibres and (c) treating the fibres while in the changed state with an aqueous solution having a pH of from 5 to 11 comprising from 0.02 to 0.3 mole per litre of a water soluble, sulphur containing compound consisting of an alkali metal, ammonium or lower alkanolamine sulphide or hydrosulphide, an aliphatic mercaptan or disulphide, or mixtures thereof, providing that when said aliphatic disulphides are the sole sulphur containing compound, the S-sulpho:thiol ratio is in the range from 4:1 to 1:4. The sulphitolysis of the fibres may be carried out using an aqueous solution preferably having a pH of from 4.5 to 11 of water soluble sulphites, bisulphites or hydrosulphites e.g. the alkali metal, ammonium or lower alkanolamine salts, or solutions may also be used containing in addition an oxidising agent such as a cupric or ferric ion or a water soluble polythionate e.g. alkali metal, ammonium or lower alkanolamine trithionates, tetrathionates, pentathionates and hexathionates or it may be carried out using solutions containing in addition to the sulphites bisulphites or hydrosulphites a reducing agent e.g. a water soluble mercaptan. Suitable sulphur containing compounds are the mono-, di-, and tri, ethanolamine and isopropanolamine sulphides and hydrosulphides, cysteine, thioglycolic acid, dimercaptoadipic acid, thiolactic acid, betamercaptopropionic acid, thioglycol, thioglycerol and mercaptoethyl sulphonate, cystine, dithiodiglycolic acid, the cyclic disulphide of dimercaptoadipic acid, thiolactic acid disulphide, beta-mercaptopropionic acid, ammonium thioglycolate and the ammonium salt of cysteine. Preferably temperature ranges for the final treatment are from ambient to 35C for treating hair, and from ambient to 100C for treating wool.
