1255308 Rearing molluscs SEASALTER & HAM OYSTER FISHERY CO Ltd 10 Nov 1970 53325/70 Index A5E 1C5J E1C5E E1C15E E1A5B2 E1A3C E1A3E E1A3G E1A1F3 E1A4 A method of rearing bivalve molluscs of the mud-burrowing habit comprises covering a suitable, submerged bed area with restraining means 14 such that (a) water can contact the bed (b) animals detrimental to the molluscs are kept out and (c) means 14 does not touch most of the bed area even after silting. Pesticide is applied to the bed. As shown, a box has sides 12 to contain young molluscs and to determine build-up of silt and sides 13 at least one inch higher than sides 12. To exclude predators such as crabs netting 14 may be used. The box may have a base 11 to facilitate removal of the molluscs. In modifications the sides 12 may be dispensed with and sides 13 could be the same height as sides 12 but with corner posts to carry netting 14. The netting may be replaced by foraminous sheeting, woven or sufficiently rigid that the whole apparatus may be integral with it. The pesticide may be 1-napthyl-N-methyl carbamate and may be applied at least once every two weeks.
