Abstract

1,255,174. Aqueous suspension polymerization of styrene. BRITISH PETROLEUM CO. Ltd. 6 March, 1969 [10 April, 1968], No. 17224/68. Heading C3P. Styrene is polymerized in aq. suspension to an average mol. wt. of 30,000-200,000 in the presence of a free radical initiator and a waterinsoluble Ca, Ba or Mg phosphate, the pH of the suspension being maintained at 5.0-8.0. A chain transfer agent may also be present. In the examples styrene was polymerized in an aq. suspension of t-dodecyl mercaptan, benzoyl peroxide, 1,1 - di - t - butyl peroxy 3,5,5 - trimethyl cyclohexane and as suspending agent apatite (prepared from a mixture of tri-sodium orthophosphate, di-sodium hydrogen orthophosphate and calcium chloride) with a sodium alkyl phosphate as an extender.
