Abstract

1,255,156. Coated sheet materials. ARMSTRONG CORK CO. 15 Nov., 1968 [16 Nov., 1967], No. 54334/68. Addition to 1,150,902. Heading B2E. [Also in Divisions B6 and C3] An embossed thermoplastic sheet is produced by blending a vinyl resin (e.g. polyvinyl chloride), a plasticiser for the resin, a heatdecomposable blowing agent and pentaerythritol tetramethacrylate, forming a sheet from the blend, applying to the sheet in a decorative pattern a polymerisation catalyst for the monomer and heating the patterned sheet to decompose the blowing agent and polymerise the monomer in contact with the catalyst. The blowing agent may be azobisformamide, substituted hydrazides, substituted azo compounds and substituted nitroso compounds. The plasticiser may be dioctyl phthalate. Blowing agent activators such as dibasic lead phosphite or zinc laurate may be present in the blend. Other ingredients of the blend may be pigments (e.g. TiO 2 ), dyes, granular fillers (e.g. clay, limestone or a silicate), heat and light stabilisers. The blend may be doctored, roll coated or otherwise applied to a backing or to a strippable carrier and gelled thereon. The catalyst may be a free radical generating type (e.g. benzoyl peroxide) or an aliphatic azo compound (e.g. alpha, alpha-azodiisobutyronitrile). The catalyst may be applied as a printing ink also containing vinyl chloride-vinyl acetate copolymer binder pigment, solvents and a wetting agent. A clear or coloured coating of the thermoplastic resin may be sprayed, doctored, or roll applied over the entire sheet after the catalyst.
