Abstract
1,254,947. Knitting machines. RACALTERMIONIC Ltd. 3 March, 1970 [5 March, 1969], No. 11714/69. Heading D1C. [Also in Division G3] A knitting machine is controlled by a magnetic tape, prepared in computer format, whereon each word making up a complete block is a number of bits making up a 36 bit character by which the machine is instructed to perform a given operation. The blocks 1 to n recorded on the tape are interleaved as a sequence 1, n, 2, n-1, 3, n-2.... x, y, where x and y are respectively n are n+2 #2 #2 where n is even and n+3, n+1 where n is odd. #2 #2 So that, on reversal, the block adjacent to the first block comprises the final operation of the machine in the sequence. A block on the tape is read into an intermediate store on request and words fed to a character assembler preparing a 36 kit instruction for the machine. The store requests a further data block when its contents fall to a value determined by the block separation. It is stated that to avoid loss of data in the store when the machine is stopped, a store employing memory cores is used or the machine is permitted to run on until the store is empty, during which time the request of data from the tape is inhibited.
