Abstract

1,254,909. Electrolytic color-alkali cells. DOW CHEMICAL CO. Dec.3, 1969 [Dec.3, 1968], No.59126/69. Heading C7B. In an electrolytic diaphragm-type cell for producing Cl 2 and NaOH having an array of interleaved anodes 30 and cathodes 32 of height at least 3.5 feet (1.07m.), e.g. coupled respectively to anode back plate 28 and back screen 34 (forming the cathode-diaphragm structure), disposed within a housing 12 through which brine flows, the (anolyte) brine is recirculated upwardly between each adjacent anode and cathode, e.g. by pumping it through an external flow loop (48), Fig. 4 (not shown), at a rate between 5 and 10 V. S, gallons (18.9-37.9 1. )/minute/kiloampere of current passing between the adjacent anode and cathode. An insulating coating 46 and/or 66 (e.g. of phenol formaldehyde) may be applied to the anode back plate 28 and/or outer end 64 adjacent spaces provided between the electrodes for the brine circulation.
