Abstract
1,254,390. Ferrites. GENERAL MOTORS CORP. 4 June, 1970 [16 June, 1969], No. 26990/70. Heading H1H. [Also in Division C1] A finely divided ferrite is produced by coprecipitating ferric hydroxide with a barium, strontium or lead salt of an aliphatic carboxylic acid containing at least ten carbon atoms to form an intimate mixture of finely-divided particles, separating this mixture of particles from the mother liquor, heating the mixture of particles to dehydrate the ferric hydroxide and to decompose the barium, strontium or lead salt into its corresponding oxide, and then heating the resultant particulate mixture of oxides further to produce the corresponding crystalline ferrite in a finely divided form. Specified acids are lauric and stearic. The relative proportions of the starting materials may be chosen so that a hexagonal ferrite is produced. Complex ferrites may be made from mixtures of iron, barium, strontium and lead and other metals, e.g. manganese, magnesium, zinc and cobalt. The ferrites produced by this method may have an average particle size close to or smaller than the theoretical single domain size for that ferrite.
