In order to improve the rigidity of a candle, a core of substantial rigidity is provided, the core and wick combination extending longitudinally of the candle and the core being substantially consumed in use by the flame on the wick. The core and wick may be integral, with the wick disposed as an outer layer coaxial with the core (Figs. 1-3a, 5 and 6, not shown) or the two may be provided separately (Fig. 4, not shown). The core and wick may form part of a stemwick arrangement, i.e. one where the wick extends only part-way into the wax and moves downwardly as the wax is consumed. Such an arrangement is shown in section, Fig. 7a, and in exploded view, Fig. 7. A float 12 supports a base-plate 11 for a shield 25. The cylindrical wick 10 is coaxial with, and separate from, the core 3. The core supports a rider 13 to which may be attached decorations. The wick on the stem wick may be of semicircular X-section (Fig. 10) and a plurality of solid wicks may be provided on the float (Fig. 13). Various cross-sections for the wick-core combination (Fig. 5) and for the separate core (Figs. 11 and 21) are described. The core may be made of wood, consumable plastics, or fibre impregnated with shellac. It is stated that the core should be of non-explosive material.
