The invention comprises compounds of the general formula in which R is CN, hydroxy, a C 1 -C 6 alkanoyloxy group or a group of the formula They may be prepared by the treatment of a compound of general formula with " singlet " oxygen. The " singlet " oxygen may be produced by passing oxygen through an electric discharge tube, by irradiation of oxygen in the presence of a sensitizer or by the decomposition of a peroxide. An example is given of the production of 2-methyl-6-(3-hydroperoxy-4- methylene cyclohexan-1-yl)-4-heptanane.
