Abstract
1,254,009. Organotin mercapto carboxylic acid ester sulphides. ARGUS CHEMICAL CORP. 10 Dec., 1968 [19 Dec., 1967 (2)], No. 58544/68. Heading C2J. [Also in Division C3] The invention comprises organotin mercapto carboxylic acid ester sulphides having at least one tin atom to which organic groups are linked only through carbon and sulphur and having linked to at least one tin atom per molecule at least one hydrocarbon group, at least one α or # mercapto carboxylic acid ester group and at least one sulphide sulphur group, the organotin compound having a tin content of 18-35% by weight and a sulphur content of 10-26% by weight. The compounds have the general formula wherein n is 1 or 2; x is 0, 1 or 2; in is an integer from 0-5; R is a hydrocarbon radical having 1-18 carbon atoms; R 1 is a hydrocarbon radical having 1-18 carbon atoms derived from a mono- or poly-hydric alcohol having 1-4 hydroxyl groups and 1-18 carbon atoms; R 2 is R or -S-Z-(COOR 1 ) m and Z is an alkylene radical with the S group alpha or beta to a COOR 1 group, having from 1-5 carbon atoms and optionally containing additional groups, e.g. carboxylic acid, ester or salt groups or mercapto groups. The compounds are prepared by reacting an organotin halide in the presence of sufficient water or organic solvent to form a suspension or solution with a less than stoichiometric amount of a mercapto carboxylic acid, ester and an alkali or alkaline earth metal base in an amount stoichiometrically equivalent to the mercapto acid ester and then reacting the product to a pH not exceeding 10 with an alkali or alkaline earth metal sulphide and separating the organotin mercapto carboxylic acid ester sulphide from the aqueous portion. The compounds are used as stabilizers for polyvinyl chloride resins, improving their resistance to deterioration when heated at 350‹ F. Stabilizers comprising a mixture of a mono-organotin compound (i.e. containing one hydrocarbon group per tin atom) and a diorganotin compound (two hydrocarbon groups per tin atom) are particularly preferred.
