Abstract

1,253,890. Collating apparatus. F. C. BLOWSKY. 10 June, 1969 [13 June, 1968], No. 29210/69. Heading B8R. A rotary collator comprises a drum 20 having a series of radially directed pockets 38, first feed means 31 for ejecting a sheet from a pocket, and second feed means 49, 50 for receiving and forwarding an ejected sheet. Drive wheels 42 operate the friction roller ejecting means 31 associated with each pocket, the drive wheels being rotated by engagement with a shoe 46 as the drum 20 rotates. A further shoe 47 is provided for rotating the drive wheels 42 to cause a preliminary and partial separation of the sheets from their stacks. A stripper device 48 frees each partially separated sheet from retaining devices 30 engaging the leading edge of the topmost sheet of each stack so that these sheets may be readily ejected upon engagement of wheels 42 with main shoe 46. A braking shoe 51 prevents continued rotation of separator rollers 31 upon grasping of an ejected sheet by feed rollers 49, 50. A driven belt 58 serves to guide ejected sheets into the nip of rollers 49, 50. Each pocket is provided with an adjustable back-stop 25 to accommodate sheets of different sizes. The ejected sheets are fed to a table 59 which is incrementally lowered and periodically angularly displaced to stagger the individual book units produced by the sheets deposited thereon. The collator is provided with missing sheet and multiple sheet detectors to stop the machine if a feeding error occurs. Either of the detectors may be disabled to prevent the machine being stopped in the event that a pocket is deliberately left empty or thicker than normal sheets are present in a pocket.
