Abstract
1,253,805. Drinking devices for cages. M. E. WALLACE. 19 Nov., 1968 [20 Nov., 1967], No. 52691/67. Heading A1M. A drinking device, e.g. for a rodent cage 1, comprises a supply conduit 5, at least one feed valve 6 for positioning in or adjacent the cage 1 and drainage means 2 below the feed valve(s) 6 for unconsumed liquid. Several cages 1 may be fed from the same conduit 5, or from branch conduits (not shown). Liquid from a tank 27 reaches the conduit 5 through a flexible tube 8 and an adjustable pressure valve 23. The or each feed valve 6, Fig. 2, may comprise a body 17, e.g. of metal, screwed to an aperture in the lower wall 20 of the conduit 5, and the liquid flow may be adjusted to a uniform series of drips by varying the spacing between the upper end 21 of the body 18 and the upper wall 22 of the conduit 5. Alternatively (not shown), the valve(s) 6 may be actuated by the touch of an animal within the cage 1. A collecting bowl 10 below the valve or valves of each respective cage 1 funnels the unconsumed liquid into a common drainage channel 2 having an outlet 3. Alternatively, Figs. 3-4 (not shown), the drainage means may comprise a trough-like extension (32) of the cage floor, having drainage holes (36), a collecting channel (not shown) lying below the holes (36).
