Abstract

In a device for determining the oxygen content of a gas containing combustibles, the gas, which may be mixed with an oxidant gas of known oxygen content, is passed into a tube 22 of solid electrolyte e.g. zirconium oxide, via tube 12, and a reference gas is passed outside the tube via passage 44 between adapter 34 and housing 32. A porous bond electrode 24 e.g. of platinum is bonded at one end to the outside of the tube 22, and a tubular electrode 26 also of platinum is bonded on the inner surface of the tube 22. The temperature in the region of the outer electrode 24 is maintained constant by a thermostat 41, 43, 42, this temperature being sufficient to cause combustion of the gas by inner electrode 26. A platinum lead 25 extends from electrode 24 to a contacter 50 and a tab 27 extends outside the tube from electrode 26 to a contacter 52. The output from these contacters is applied to a meter which gives an indication of the amount of residual oxygen in the gas after combustion and hence the amount of combustibles in the gas. The tube 12 is preferably a ceramic coated with a layer of platinum, and the flow of gas in tube 12 is regulated.
