A package comprises trays 12, 13, the inside faces of which are lined by portions 15, 16 of a sheet 14, a third portion 21 of the sheet connecting portions 15, 16, the trays having their side edges juxtaposed (Fig. 4) to enclose sterile contents and having their side edges sealed together to maintain the sterility. As shown in Fig. 1, two trays 18, 19 are provided for holding the items to be packaged, e.g. medical instruments, Fig. 5 (not shown). The trays may be formed with shaped recesses for accommodating the correspondingly shaped instruments. The loaded trays are placed in side-by-side relation upon the sheet 14, which in turn overlies the trays 12 and 13 arranged in side-by-side relation. Trays 18, 19 fit within trays 12, 13 respectively, and are retained by interlocking rib means (38, Fig. 6) so that the central section 21 of the sheet 14 effectively forms a hinge between trays 12 and 13. The wrapping sheet 14 is now folded to the form shown in Fig. 3, whereupon tray 13 is hinged about section 21 to overlie tray 12, Fig. 4. A sterilizing gas may be passed into the assembled trays through an opening 24. Trays 12 and 13 are provided with formations 40 which interengage in the assembled position of Fig. 4. The package is completed by means of a sealing tape 22, a label 26 and a transparent bag 27. The package may be sterilized by passing ethylene oxide thereinto, e.g. by permeating the packaging.
