Abstract
1,253,465. Velocity-modulated tubes. VARIAN ASSOCIATES. 30 June, 1969, No. 32996/69. Heading H1D. In a microwave tube, an arrangement for broad-band coupling a coupled cavity slow-wave structure 8-as shown, a centipede structure, i.e. a coupled resonator structure formed by a sequence of discs axially spaced along a conductive tube, each disc being centrally apertured to permit passage of the electron beam, and having an array of peripherally spaced, radially directed legs, adjacent ones of which are of S-shape and of reverse S-shape, respectively-to a rectangular output waveguide 6 includes a hollow conductive port 24 coaxial with the beam and leading into the collector 4, and an oval wave-energy coupling hole 25 provided in a broad wall of the waveguide which closes the output end of the centipede structure, which hole surrounds the port 24 and has its major axis extending perpendicular to the narrow walls of the waveguide. Waveguide 6 is closed at its lower end by a structure 28 consisting of two plugs filling the regions between the narrow walls of the guide and the ridge, which plugs are bridged by a plate 30, and have slanting faces 29 to reflect radiation passing through the hole 25 along the output guide 6. The centipede structure may be severed, and may be preceded by a multi-cavity, stagger-tuned klystron input section.
