Abstract

1,253,383. Increasing adhesion. BRITISH RAILWAYS BOARD. 10 April, 1969 [17 April, 1968], No. 18135/68. Heading B7J. A method of cleaning a rail for a vehicle by means of a plasma torch carried upon the vehicle, wherein electrical power supplied to the torch is varied to increase automatically as the speed of the vehicle varies, makes use of apparatus wherein the plasma torch 2 is in combination with speed-responsive means 1 for providing a signal dependent upon the speed at which the vehicle passes over the rail and regulating means 6 responsive to this signal for automatically varying the power to the torch 2 as the speed varies. As particularly described, the power is varied so that it is approximately proportional to the square root of the speed and to achieve this a function converting means 5 is interposed between the speed responsive means 1 and the regulating means 6. As shown, the speed responsive means is a tachometric generator 1 whose output is substantially proportional to the speed of the vehicle, the function converting means is a function generator 5 whose output is substantially proportional to the square root of the speed and the regulating means is a transductor 6.
