Abstract

1,253,325. Modulating light. PHILIPS ELECTRONIC & ASSOCIATED INDUSTRIES Ltd. 12 March, 1970 [15 March, 1969], No. 11913/70. Heading H4F. [Also in Division H1] In an image intensifier of the type comprising a photo-conductive layer and an electric field sensitive layer sandwiched between electrodes connected to a source of potential difference so that an image incident on the photoconductor sets up a charge pattern and thereby causes the field sensitive layer to locally modulate a projection light beam incident thereon, it is sometimes possible for the projection beam to reach the photoconductor and so reduce the contrast of the intensified image. This may be prevented by disposing a layer of semi-conductor material between the photo-conductor and field sensitive layer, such material having a direct band gap less than that of the photo-conductor, by an amount preferably not more than 0À2 eV so that it strongly absorbs radiaton corresponding to the direct band transition of the photo-conductor. Thus if the photo-conductor is copper activated CdSe (1À8 eV gap) the semi-conductor may be CdTe, GeS or Sb 2 Se 3 (1À5, 1À7 and 1À4 eV respectively) vapour deposited at room temperature to provide a fine crystalline layer with a resistivity at least equal to the dark resistivity of the photo-conductor, i.e. 10<SP>-7</SP> ohm cm. in this case. A mixture of 3 parts Sb 2 Se 3 to one of GeS is preferred. In a Schlieren optical system, Figs. 1 and 2 (not shown), the field sensitive layer (14) is deformable, e.g. of polymerized silicone oil. In Fig. 3 (not shown) the sensitive layer (36) is a nematic liquid crystal which varies in transmissivity or reflectivity according to the local electric field. A Schlieren system may again be used employing the reflectivity variation, or the variably transmitted projection beam may de reflected from a mosaic of cracked aluminium foil (35) between the liquid crystal and semi-conductor (34) layers to give direct reproduction on a screen.
