Abstract

1,253,214. Grenade launchers; grenades. MECAR S.A. 29 Nov., 1968 [13 Dec., 1967], No. 56672/68. Headings F3A and F3C. A grenade launcher comprises a device for attachment to the muzzle of a firearm barrel 1, the device having two bored sleeves the axis of one sleeve being offset from the axis of the other and one of the sleeves being adapted to be attached to the muzzle of the barrel and the other to carry a grenade, the tail of which surrounds the sleeve. The bores of the sleeves are connected by a transverse passage 11 so that propellent gases from a cartridge fired in the firearm can enter the bore of the other sleeve to ignite the propellent charge 14 of the grenade. More than one grenade carrying sleeve may be provided. In the construction shown the other sleeve is provided with a constrictor 13 and the device is positioned on a flash eliminator 2 of the barrel 1 by a finger 18. The propellent charge 14 for the grenade is contained in an envelope formed of plastics material or aluminium and is ignited by the ignition of a bead 16 of black powder. The grenade is frictionally held on the device by a detent 17. The grenade carrying sleeve may be provided with a piston and firing pin assembly (Figs. 3, 4, not shown) and the grenade carrying sleeve may be angled with respect to the axis of the firearm barrel (Fig. 3, not shown). The propellent charge for the grenade may be provided with inner and outer envelopes, the outer envelope being formed with apertures (Fig. 3, not shown) or the envelope may be extended rearwardly to form a guide about the grenade carrying sleeve (Fig. 4, not shown). In the latter construction apertures are formed in the base of the envelope so that propellent gas can pass between the base of the envelope and the end of the grenade carrying sleeve.
