Abstract
1,253,183. Puffing tobacco. R. J. REYNOLDS TOBACCO CO. 25 Feb., 1970 [13 March, 1969], No. 9195/70. Addition to 1,222,308. Heading A2C. Tobacco is impregnated with an organic fluid of boiling point less than that of water by passing it first into the liquid organic fluid and then into the vapour of the organic fluid, the fluid being maintained at a temperature above its boiling point and under superatmospheric pressure, and the impregnated tobacco is then immediately withdrawn and subjected to an elevated temperature and a reduced pressure sufficient to expand the tobacco. Shredded tobacco, optionally conditioned by a moistener 12, is conveyed via a rotary star valve 16 into the bottom, liquid organic fluid containing, part of a heated and pressurized impregnator 20 through which it is transported by a screw conveyer 22 into the upper, organic fluid vapour containing, part of said impregnator 20 to be discharged therefrom via a rotary star valve 28 into a stream of hot gas circulating through a conduit 32 and an expander 34 where it is puffed. The puffed tobacco is passed to a cyclone separator 36 and a steam stripper 40 to remove the organic fluid, and is then conditioned in a reorderer 48 by the addition of water and/or flavouring materials &c. before discharge by a conveyer 50. Many suitable organic fluids are specified, fluorcarbons, especially trichloromonofluoromethane, being preferred.
