Abstract
1,253,150. Mass spectrometers. ASSOCIATED ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. 9 June, 1970 [20 June, 1969], No. 31411/69. Heading H1D. [Also in Division G6] A method of mass spectrometric analysis of a substance comprises the steps of dissolving the substance in a gas whose pressure and temperature are such that the gas behaves as a liquid, forming a beam of the dissolved substance from the solution of the substance in the gas, ionizing said beam and causing said ionized beam to enter a mass spectrometer to be analysed therein. A sample to be analysed is dissolved in a chamber 10 in a gas provided by a source 12, e.g. a compressor or cylinder, and passes through a valve 14 to a beam forming means 16 and a slit system 30 before being ionized, e.g. by an electron or photon beam, and admitted to a mass spectrometer (not shown) which is preferably of the type having a scanned magnetic analyser. The beam forming means 16 comprises nozzles 18 and 20 preferably arranged as a Kantrowitz nozzle-skimmer system which removes lighter gas molecules for evacuation through an outlet 28 thereby increasing the proportion of substance in the gas/substance mixture. The slit system 30 comprises two apertured plates 32, 34 and outlets 36 and 38 for differential evacuation to enable the mass spectrometer to be maintained at a pressure of 10<SP>-5</SP> torr or less.
