Bricks 5, compression moulded in a rotary table compression moulding machine, are fed to a conveyer 11 prior to firing in an autoclave and have their upper surfaces shaped by passage under a pulley-driven rotating shaft 14 carrying sets of radial steel blades 19 and 20. The outer blades 19 are longer than the inner blades 20 and the edges of the blades are curved to give an upwardly convex shape to the upper surface of the bricks. Each set of blades is carried on the shaft by a separate sleeve 18 to which the blades are bolted. In a second embodiment, blades 19 and 20 have flat serrated edges and are of the same length to give a flat-ridged upper surface to the bricks. In the embodiment shown in Fig. 2, the shaft is transverse to the direction of movement of the conveyer since the bricks are longitudinally laid on the conveyer. Where bricks are laid transversely on the conveyer, the shaft is located longitudinally and is driven across the conveyer along guides which, if the conveyer is moving continuously, move with the conveyer during the shaping operation (see Fig. 5, not shown). In another embodiment, shown in Fig. 8, the shaping means consists of a rotary steel wire brush having a concave working surface, splaying of the bristles being prevented by side plates 31.
