Abstract

A motor vehicle headlamp has a parabolic main reflector 1 with a focal point F, a halogen filament light source 3, a translucent cover 2 and an auxiliary reflector 5 which is pivoted at 6 about an axis transverse to the optical axis of the main reflector and has its focus at F 2 . In the position shown the auxiliary reflector produces a main beam. When turned clockwise it produces a dipped beam (Fig. 3, not shown). The auxiliary reflector is less than semicircular in plan to provide an asymmetric beam and may have a screening hood (21, Figs. 6 and 7, not shown) to reduce dazzle when the headlamp is dipped or may have ribs (17, 18, Fig. 5, not shown) situated on its upper edge near the light source to give good light-dark boundaries. In a modification the pivot for the auxiliary reflector lies in a plane normal to the optical axis of the main reflector but is inclined to the horizontal. Thus when the headlamp is dipped, the beam is directed towards the nearside of the road. The cover 2 may be provided with diffusing corrugations on part of its surface. The axial coiled filament may be replaced by a transverse or oblique filament.
