A film or negative holding device comprises a plate 1 having an aperture 2 therein and two pairs of jaws 3-6 provided on the plate to hold the negative in front of the aperture, the jaws being arranged adjacent opposite edges of the aperture. The pair 5, 6 is mounted for simultaneous displacement towards the pair 3, 4 against the bias of springs 16. The jaw 3 is fixed to the plate 1, while the jaws 4, 6 are pivotable about axes 7, 8 respectively disposed at the ends of jaws 3, 5. In use, the jaws 4, 6 are pivoted upwards from the plane of the plate a cam 19 being moved to the position shown so as to displace the jaws 5, 6 towards the jaws 3, 4. The negative is placed over the aperture with two edge portions contacting the jaws 3, 5. The jaws 4, 6 are then pivoted downwards and locked in position on the jaws 3, 5 by portions 10a of arms 10 engaging portions 4a, 6a of the jaws 4, 6. Lists 11 on the jaws 4, 6 are pressed on to the edges of the negative. The cam 19 is then pivoted clockwise (as seen) thus allowing jaws 5, 6 to move away from jaws 3, 4 under spring action, this movement tensioning the negative to a planar position. Both sides thereof are accessible for the removal of dust particles, without having to remove the negative from the holding device.
