The rotor resistance may be continuously variable but as shown comprises resistor sections whose values are in geometric progression with the internal resistance of the rotor, and sections are short circuited in turn by electromagnetic relays 8 . . . 14 controlled by switching amplifiers 18, energized from control means 49 via a linear amplifier 19, and whose operating levels are in arithmetic progression. The characteristics of function generators 24, 48 are derived mathematically.
