Abstract
1,252,544. Turbine or compressor rotors. GENERAL MOTORS CORP. April 9, 1970 [May 12, 1969], No.16970/70. Heading FiT. A turbine or compressor rotor comprises at least one mounting ring 10 to which blades 18 are secured by means of arms 21, a fibrous reinforcing ring 34 and a spacer ring 35 being disposed between the arms 21 and surrounding the mounting ring 10. The reinforcing ring 34 is made from wound fibres of carbon, boron, sapphire, beryllium or tungsten bonded by a metal matrix or an epoxy resin and is formed in three sections each of which occupies the space between two adjacent arms 21. The spacer ring 35 may be similarly formed in three sections or may be a one piece member having apertures for the blade mounting arms 21. Ring 35 is made of thin steel having axial corrugations to increase radial resilience and may be segmental with the segments cemented or brazed to the mounting ring 10. The latter comprises a central portion 23 having apertures 27 for the blade arms 21, and radial and axial flanges 25, 26. Alternatively ring 10 may be cylindrical or frusto-conical without flanges. The blade arms 21 are secured within apertures 27 by semi-circular pins 30 passing through holes 29 in flanges 25 and through circular holes 33 in the arms, there being freedom for slight pivotal movement of the blades about pins 30. The resilience of spacer ring 35 enables mounting ring 10 to expand to some degree relative to reinforcing ring 34. Several mounting rings 10 may be clamped together to form a multistage rotor by a tie bolt (15), Fig. 1 (not shown), passing through endplates (11, 13). Alternatively each mounting ring may carry several blade rows.
