Abstract
1,252,353. Feeding sheets. McCALL CORP. 10 Oct., 1969 [10 Oct., 1968], No. 49970/69. Heading B8R. A method of producing a magazine having a loose insert therein comprises the steps of progressively gathering a plurality of signatures S in overlapping relation along a saddle 15 so that the signature leaves depend downwardly on each side of the saddle, raising a portion of the depending leaves L on one side of the saddle to form an inverted V-shaped separation 120 between adjacent leaves, and feeding an insert upwardly into each said separation while the overlapping signatures are supported by the saddle. In apparatus for carrying out the method, a wire 115 is extended from the signature gathering unit (10) to the stitching unit (25) of a conventional saddle-stitch book binding machine for the purpose of forming the separation 120, and an insert feeding unit (35) is positioned adjacent the stitching unit (Fig. 1, not shown). The feeding unit includes a hopper (40) from which the inserts are fed into the V-shaped separation 120 by means of an arrangement including a suction member (60) which brings successive inserts into the path of a projecting finger (53) formed on a rotating wheel (48) co-operating with an endless belt (75) which delivers each insert to further conveyers (90), (100) for upward insertion into the V-shaped space 120 (Fig. 2, not shown).
