Abstract
1,251,976. Oleanolic acid derivatives. RAVIZZA S.A. 1 Aug., 1969 [8 Aug., 1968], No. 38024/68. Heading C2C. Novel compounds of formula (wherein R is a saturated or unsaturated, linear or branched aliphatic hydrocarbon chain comprising from 3 to 20 carbon atoms and having no more than 2 carbon atoms in each of any branches, and R 1 is -CH 2 R where R is as just defined, the two groups denoted by the symbol R being the same or different) are prepared from oleanolic acid by acylation of the 3-hydroxy group and esterification of the 17-carboxy group, these steps being performed in either order. The 17-esterification may be effected either directly using a compound R 1 X (X = halo), or indirectly via a 17-halocarbonyl compound which is reacted with a compound R 1 OH. Geranyl oleanolate is prepared by reacting oleanolic acid with geranyl bromide. Compounds of the above formula are stated to possess antiphlogistic and anti-ulcer activity, and may be made up with carriers into pharmaceutical compositions for oral and parenteral administration.
