Abstract

1,251,770. Abrasive tools. NORTON CO. 15 June, 1970 [19 June, 1969], No. 28850/70. Heading B3D. A cut-off wheel having a diameter to thickness ratio of at least 40 comprises abrasive grains bonded in an organic polymer matrix, and at least one woven glass cloth disc located within the bonding matrix and parallel to the side faces of the wheel, the warp and weft of the glass cloth consisting of bundles of continuous filaments having a maximum twist per inch of 1À5. The organic polymer matrix may be a phenol-formaldehyde condensation resin, a matrix of hydrocarbon rubber and a phenolformaldehyde condensation resin, or shellac. The glass cloth disc 32 extends from the periphery 34 to a point 36 spaced from the centre hole 38, and is treated with silane to improve adhesion to the organic matrix which includes abrasive grains of aluminium oxide. Where more than one glass cloth disc is used, the warp and weft of one disc are arranged at 450 to those of the other. The warp and weft strands 16, 18 may be woven, as shown in Fig. 2, or the warp strands may merely be placed over the weft strands. In another arrangement, the strands are radially orientated with a single strand in the form of a flat spiral, or a plurality of concentric strands woven through the radial strands. The cut-off wheel, which may be 20 inch in diameter and 0À18 inch thick, is stated as being operable at 23,000 s.f.p.m.
